Peninsula, Ohio History
The Village of Peninsula, Ohio, nestled in the scenic Cuyahoga Valley between Cleveland and Akron, has a rich history. Settled in 1818 by Alonzo Dee and later named in 1837 for a large bend in the Cuyahoga River, Peninsula thrived during the Ohio and Erie Canal era with bustling commerce, including 14 bars, 5 hotels, sandstone quarries, boatyards, and more. However, a devastating flood in 1913 destroyed much of the canal infrastructure, leading to decline.
In the 1960s, the Peninsula Valley Heritage Association spearheaded preservation efforts, restoring key historic buildings. Today, the village (population 565) features art galleries, shops, museums, and eateries. Visitors can explore the charming streets, hike Cuyahoga Valley National Park trails, or ride the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, all within this picturesque setting.
